And then he walked along the edge of the Circle

This is the place where we will post your stories about the Green's Playhouse, The Glasgow Apollo and Satelitte City (The Wee Apollo). As it develops we will break the stories up into sections such as Myths, Gigs I missed, Meeting the Bands, Where are they now etc. No story too trivial and we will only edit out bad language!

New Forum structure on Apollomemories soon.

Comments on Focus [reply]

This gig was at Clouds.  I've still got the ticket.  The number on it is 1392.  I don't know how many Clouds held, but it was absolutely heavin' that night and you could only just about get through the door into the place, it was so packed.

They were riding high in the charts at that time, having just had hits with "Hocus Pocus" and "Sylvia" and were billed on the ticket as "Europe's No. 1 Band".  I remember they played both of those songs at least twice that night.

I don't think they were ever heard of again, were they?

The first gig I ever went to was a Focus gig, but to the best of my memory it was in the Apollo itself, some time in 1974, and Blue were supporting? I was a scabby wee 12-year-old, but I was mightily impressed by the whole experience: The shabby grandeur of the building itself, a pall of illicit smoke, and Focus themselves, who I seem to recall performing most of the Hamburger Concerto album. Again, if memory serves, they had a fantastic backline which seemed to consist entirely of those big old wooden Leslie speakers.
I think they are still going, Simon! Guitarist Jan Akermaan left aeons ago, but yodelling organist Thijs Van Leer is still touring under the Focus name, and the last I heard had managed to convince drummer Pierre Van Der Linden to rejoin...
