And then he walked along the edge of the Circle

This is the place where we will post your stories about the Green's Playhouse, The Glasgow Apollo and Satelitte City (The Wee Apollo). As it develops we will break the stories up into sections such as Myths, Gigs I missed, Meeting the Bands, Where are they now etc. No story too trivial and we will only edit out bad language!

New Forum structure on Apollomemories soon.

Comments on Heavy Pettin [reply]

I REMEBER BEING IN LAUDERS BAR WHEN THE GUITARTIST WAS SITTING BESIDE ME, I THINK THEY WERE THE FIRST BAND ON OF A DOUBLE SUPPORT ACT    WAS IT HELIX FROM CANADA?  AND WERE THEY SUPPORTING KISS? [reply]

hi Peter - check out The Apollo Years 1983 for the answer.  I really enjoyed HP - could have been a huge act with a little bit of luck. [reply]

Unfortunately their luck ran out when Don Arden (Sharon Osbourne's dad) took over their management. When he dies his biography will be the bible for bands and their managers;)
He gave Peter Grant his first job.

Surely they were just a bog standard heavy rock band who got very lucky?I was well into punk at this point. although still humpin gear for Glasgow.a mate and i decided to go and see them play in the Venue in Sauchiehall St to see what the fuss was about. We wandered into the Venues car park about 7pm,,,,,,,then straight into the building cos nobody was at the door,,,,,,
then we walked right around to the doors of the hall itself. We pushed open the doors and wandered in,,,and there were the band,,,hangin about and soundcheckin etc. Complete with standard rock chick burds etc .They asked us what we wanted and we told them we were here to see them,,,,,,,so they told us we could buy tickets from the and come back later.
We paid somethin like £3.50 and left them to it. When we got outside we realised it didnt open til about 10pm,,when we should be home by about 11pm,,so we managed to sell them to some other punters on the way back ome that night! Heheheh! Im glad i missed out on those AWFUL helium Hamey Vocals !Yeeeuuuch !!!!
What the **** was Brian May thinkin of?

Godawful band! The singer thought he was Rod Stewart though constantly denied it. Lets look at the evidence. Tartan everywhere..... OK he's Scottish. Spikey Blonde Hair..... hmmm..... the voice.... a bit croaky......

I can only say Jim, you were lucky to miss them. Sadly I 'caught' them a couple of times!

The only time i "saw" them was at a Kelvingrove festival in the early eighties. They all stood around together with the usual rock star gear on, (bikers jackets , jeans etc.) looked a bunch of big headed prats [reply]

the 2cd of 3 bands that night, 3 or 4 songs was ok. but not a real scottish rock band like nazareth. [reply]

Heavy Pettin, where are they now? I was a mate of the band and naturally thought they were awright! Seriously, apart from Hameys whiney voice and the disastorous attempt at Eurovision the band were the biggest thing in Scotland at the time. Remember Rab being beside himself when they supported Kiss as he was the biggest KISS fan, along with Frankie(you know who you are) [reply]

hamey was an arze but punky mendoza was an ace guitarist and nice bloke but they just didn't have that extra sparkle to make it big. their last album, the big bang, was a piss poor attempt to woo usa fm rock radio. going on the bbc wogan show at a stab at eurovision was an almighty blunder. embarassing. [reply]

Come on they weren't that bad. I knew them all pretty well in the early 80's (apart from Hamey) when they were called Weeper and before Punky joined. We used to go watch them at the Howff or the Doune Castle. It was obvious even then that they had something going on. Who knows, without the dodgy 'Romeo' Euro song things might have been different. When I'm back in the UK I occasionally run into Brian (bassist) in the Solid Rock and I think Hamey is in Germany or USA with a band called Chyld?? but I've no idea where the rest of them are. [reply]

Sorry Frank i think they wre that bad, I frequently hear that whining drone when i'm gubbed wi a hangover. I met them a couple of times in town and they seemed really nice guys but by **** they stank bad. A lot of posing and US glam cliche` but no substance whatsoever. I think they must have had photos of Brian May in awkward situations to make him produce that pile of farm crud. Sorry guys the truth hurts. LONG LIVE THE APOLLO!!! [reply]

Heavy Pettin were brill...I was in love with Hammie..thought the world of him, we used to dance together at the Venue and he would sing in my ear...wow!  and Moatsy the drummer was a gem , Gordon Bonnar annoyed me but was alright..was it Brian..really nice quiet bloke..I was in contact with punky the other day via email which was strange but nice..a little like him..hee! He is a cool site that will bring back memories..
