And then he walked along the edge of the Circle

This is the place where we will post your stories about the Green's Playhouse, The Glasgow Apollo and Satelitte City (The Wee Apollo). As it develops we will break the stories up into sections such as Myths, Gigs I missed, Meeting the Bands, Where are they now etc. No story too trivial and we will only edit out bad language!

New Forum structure on Apollomemories soon.

Comments on Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band [reply]

I remember the gig well, although the band were 50 mins late as they were held up in fog somewhere between Edinburgh and Glasgow, I think. The band played most of the songs from the "Clear Spot" album and of course closed with "Golden Birdies". My main memories are of Captain Beefheart's (Don Van Vliet) amazing voice and of course the twin guitars of Zoot Horn Rollo and the other guy?...also Rockette Morton was amazing strutting around the stage playing the bass in his inimitable style. I must also mention Ed Marimba who was superb on drums also. A good night was had by all. Of course! Of course!

Beefheart 1974 was my first ever gig. I was 13 and my mad brother had bought me a ticket. He also bought me 4 pints in Lauders so I,m surprised  I remember anything. A band called HENRY COW were the support but were crap and went off with threats of physical abuse ringing in their ears. When Beefheart came on he introduced the band individually and they all got a great roar, however Ed Marimba got back off his drum stool and walked off the stage. Beefheart then informed us that Ed was used to more applause than that, so we had to shout and bawl like dafties to get him back out again. Absolutely brilliant. [reply]

Probably my 3rd and last visit to the Apollo for Beefheart on the 28th Oct 1980. The archive here tells me that exact date, and this being the case, it was the eve of my 19th birthday.  Nice start to the decade, good end to mine.  I was at art school in Aberdeen at that time, so I must have travelled all the way just to see The Captn and probably hitched there.
Was with some friends from my native Fife,we admired the Captn a lot.  We had a great time, it was a tight show, and I'm sure it was excellent though perhaps maybe could've done with a bit more wildness, but it was a long time ago and my memory has been clouded over in the years since.
I remember the guitarist or bassist (a well known magic band member he was.. but forgetten which) wearing a bright red clowny bowler hat with a big bow at the front of the crown or something like that.  I think the show was well attended but not capacity by any means, and I am sure he got a great reception, his fans are a dedicated bunch, loyal forever.  I certainly rate having seen C B as one of the acts I am proudest to have witnessed, out of hundreds, and although we didn't know it at the time, it was probably the last chance to see him before he hung up his trout mask forever.

It was going to be one of my magic moments getting to see one of my favorite bands, excited I was nearly wetting my pants. But where the hell were they I can`t remember how long we waited after the support but I do remember my last bus to East Kilbride was about 10:50,I ended up hearing two or even one and a half track as my mate dragged me out of the place to get that bloody last bus, what do you mean get a taxi I had spend all of my 2 or 3 pounds on bus fare and beer(oh they were the days). Not to worry saw the Magic Band in Edinburgh a couple of years ago ok there was no Captain but there will always be that brief memory of Captain at the Greens.
