And then he walked along the edge of the Circle

This is the place where we will post your stories about the Green's Playhouse, The Glasgow Apollo and Satelitte City (The Wee Apollo). As it develops we will break the stories up into sections such as Myths, Gigs I missed, Meeting the Bands, Where are they now etc. No story too trivial and we will only edit out bad language!

New Forum structure on Apollomemories soon.

Anyone any info on the whereabouts of the many support bands? [reply]

i found some info on the pete way website saying that they are recording a new album. [reply]

yeee haaa you can hear it here http://www.peteway.net/interviews.html [reply]

According to a very good source who once worked with Pete Way  (he has actually contributed to this site but it's up to him if he wants to come out of the lobby press!)Paul'Tonka'Chapman will never play with Pete Way again unless Hell freezes over, This has to do with the UFO reunion with Schenker with Tonka being unceremoniously dumped by Pete when they both had agreed to work together again. Mind you the Eagles said that too!
I'd love to see Tonka back with Pete and Phil Mogg to reform 'he Wild, the Willing & the Innocent'era UFO since Mad Micky Schenkers recent public crack up!
What d'you think?

Just how many times did Budgie play support at the Apollo? I must've seen then 5 or 6 times and I know the did more. Great wee band who never really made it but you were always  ******ured a great start to a gig when you knew Burke and the Boyos were in town. I remember Burke Shelly pinching some of my mates and mine chips from Mr.Chips before a Gillan gig-greedy bugger!

Danny Hayes singer with Weapon sent us this update on how he has been doing since playing the Apollo.

Weapon supported Motorhead on the 32 date 'Ace Up Your Sleeve Tour' The gig at The Apollo was among the best of the tour. Weapon released one single during that tour, Mad Mad World b/w Set The Stage Alight, which got to number 2 in the Heavy Metal charts. The band split towards the end of '81, due to managerial problems. Guitarest, Jeff Summers went on to play in Wildfire and Statetrooper with drummer Bruce Bisland, Bass player Baz Downes went on to join The Screaming Marionettes and I formed Paddy Goes To Holyhead, a rock covers band. This band has included some of the top musicians around including Andy Scott & Mick Tucker (Sweet), Phil Lanzon (Uriah Heep)Les Warner (The Cult). Current members include Chris & Tino Troy (Praying Mantis) Simon Jeffery (Bernie Torme Band) In October this year Weapon's unreleased, 1980 recorded album Set The Stage Alight was released ,see www.zoomclub*xx* for details.

SAHB are still doing it!

One fan writes of the SAHB’s first traditional Christmas gig:  "It's safe to say that their Christmas season of gigs at the Glasgow Apollo in December 1975 saw the SAHB at their absolute zenith. My dad took me to one of them, and to me it was the first indication that pop, or rock, could visually, as well as aurally, change the way you thought, or even the way you walked through the world… the SAHB were heroes, adored and idolised".

That was the Apollo 1975 and today nothing has changed! SAHB have moved the party from the Apollo to the best venue in Scotland (since the Apollo) and SAHB still rock!

A show brim full of surprises and special guest appearances the SAHB Xmas Eve Party is back, big, bad and at the Barras so do not miss what will be the best gig seen in Scotland during 2003.

Special Xmas Eve Souvenir Tickets are exclusively available at £18 +Booking from www.tickets-scotland*xx*

Full press releases are available from Martin@sahb*xx*

I remember going to see Toyah in the early 80's (cant remember exactly when... possibly 1982) and she was supported by Positive Noise. They had just released an album called Change Of Heart at this time, and I remember buying it. In fact it's still one of my favourite lp's. So... whatever happened to Positive Noise? Anyone know where I can get a copy of this lp on CD? Great site btw! [reply]

They became popular in places like Spain and Russia.  Russell Blackstock and Fraser Middleton ended up writing for the Sunday Mail and Evening Times respectively (Russell's old man Dixon had written in the Sports section for years, I think Russell was usurped by Billy Sloan).

I remember getting an album of theirs out of the local library....I think it was called Prince of Darkness but I might have made that up...it wasn't the worst I've heard.

Also saw them at the County Inn, Cambuslang...(home of the Clyde Disco Roadshow with such luminaries as Paul Coia and Richard 'Ibrox' Park (yes he of Fame Academy - humble beginnings for the media mogul))...there was me, Russell's cousin Kinnon and big Keith Osborne pogoin' down the front while the rest (50 or so ???) stood in a semi-circle at the back of the dancefloor.

Happy days.....

We were big Silverhead fans in the good old days - Nigel Harrison - Bass, went onto Blondie, while MDBarres surfaced in Power Station with half of Duran Duran. MDB is in movies and his Mrs Pamela, is an ex celeb groupie.
Two great albums - sixteen and savaged !

A three man band called SKYBAND opened up for Alex Haley in 1975. SKYBAND consisted of Peter Beckett, Steve Kipner and Lane Caudell. Lane went on to be an actor and later a country music artist. Steve Kipner is well known for his song writing and producing.
PETER BECKETT turned out to be one of the greatest, yet most under-rated, singer/songwriter/ musician/producers in the business. After SKYBAND, Peter fronted the band PLAYER in the 70's and 80's, toured with LITTLE RIVER BAND in the 90's, was a member of THINK OUT LOUD(back with Steve Kipner again for two lps). Prior to SKYBAND, he was a member of the English beat band 'THE THOUGHTS' and the great prog rock band PALADIN. In 1991, Peter put out one of the best AOR LPS, his solo project called 'BECKETT'. Peter produced Ronn Moss'(former PLAYER bassman)two solo cds and will be touring with him this year. I created and run Peter's website at www.peterbeckett-player*xx*, for the complete history on this great musician from SKYBAND. If anyone has any photos of SKYBAND or stories to offer for Peter's website, feel free to contact me. I am always looking for new info on Peter. I also am offering some of Peter's awesome cds for sale, some autographed. If you've never heard Peter's solo cd, then you are missing a gift of pure AOR.

hi all, anyone heard of or remember a band from the late 60's called molls myer? [reply]

I remember Molls Myer...they were around at the same time as the Downtown Flyers...both were excellent bands... [reply]

Was in toronto few weeks ago - Mr Mitchell is dj on rock radio station which broadcasts from Hard Rock Cafe downtown.

Tentatively approached him and he was really friendly - remembered the apollo gig well, with rush, and also remembered Alex Harveys dad being there and scaring the S**t out of him with stories of Glasgow Hard men

check out his website and his solo stuff is excellent - if yer in Canada over summer he is touring and apparently still plays old max stuff.

For anyone interested its Q 107 hes dj with and it can be streamed

Talking about support bands can anyone confirm that the mighty Queen played their first Apollo gig as support to (I think) Deep Purple. I remember seeing Freddie sing his first song ' Big Spender' in a harlequin leotard. Priceless!! After that I cannot remember who the main band were.
